Double Tribal Council is a regular twist that features in multiple seasons of Survivor. The twist sends both tribes to Tribal Council in one night. It first appeared in Survivor: Great Britain, and has appeared in twenty subsequent seasons.

Overview

The Double Tribal Council is the act of sending two tribes to Tribal Council on the same night, therefore eliminating two people from the game in one go. The Immunity Challenge prior to Tribal consequently becomes an individual challenge to give one or two people the chance to survive. It may be used for a number of reasons. The two primary reasons for it's use is to either speed up the game and shorten it's length, or to give both tribes a chance to get rid of any loose weight on their tribe. It can also be used to try and stop one tribe loosing all the challenges if the other tribe is dominating, therefore keeping the numbers even and also giving the dominating tribe the problem of Tribal Council. Another use is when a challenge goes awry and no clear winner can be decided, the host can just send both tribes to Tribal Council as a resolution. Depending on the number of tribes in a season, more than two tribes may also go to Tribal Council on the same day.

A variant of this - known as the "Fast Forward" - featured on multiple days of Turney vs. Suitman: Worlds Collide. A Fast Forward night sees two cycles worth of game play out across a single night to speed up the season, which is also commonly seen in the majority of Second Generation season finales, as well as in a pre-finale episode of both East Timor and Ragnarok. These special days do not technically count as a Double Tribal Council.

Appearances

  • Standard purpose-placed pre-merge Double Tribal Councils occurred in Great Britain, Caicos Islands, Seychelles, Occultus Island, Moral vs. Merciless, Second Chances, Jan Mayen, Bingo vs. Suitman, Japan, Last Leap, Conqueror's Crusade, Kiribati, Polynesia, Solomon Islands, Canary Islands, Entitled vs. Earned and Ragnarok with either one or two people immune in an individual challenge, or only one tribe immune in a tribal challenge involving three tribes.
    • In Great Britain, Caicos Islands, Occultus Island, Bingo vs. Suitman and Polynesia it was implemented on Day 1 to start the season off with a shock and give the tribes a taster of Tribal Council and a test if they could survive. It also gets rid off some of the dead weight quickly within the first day.
    • In Seychelles, a two-tribe DTC occurred the day before the merge, with both voted out players becoming the first two members of the Jury. There was also a special Quadruple Tribal Council at the start of this season, becoming the first season to have two pre-merge DTCs (see below).
    • In Moral vs. Merciless it happened just before the Jury was to begin, as an incentive for each tribe to take someone out they didn't want on it.
    • In Second Chances and Jan Mayen, it was implemented directly after a Tribe Switch to test out the new tribe dynamics.
    • In Japan, Conqueror's Crusade (twice), Kiribati, Polynesia (twice), Solomon Islands and Canary Islands it occurred between three tribes, with the challenge staying as a tribal one, but with only one of the three tribes immune.
    • In Last Leap it was implemented twice in the lengthy pre-merge, first on Day 4 with the original tribes, and then on Day 7 with the recently switched tribes.
    • In Conqueror's Crusade it was placed three times in the lengthy pre-merge, first on Day 3 and then on Day 9 between three tribes with one immune, and once on Day 6 between two with individual immunity.
  • Unintentional Double Tribal Councils occurred in Jordan, Seychelles and Polynesia. All three instances occurred when an Immunity Challenge ended in deadlock, with two tribes unable to declare a victory. in Jordan and Polynesia a Double Tribal Council was called as a way to end the deadlock, with two tribes then each having to vote off a player. In Seychelles this was in fact a Quadruple Tribal Council, due to the four-tribe twist.
  • In Brunei, Friends vs. Favorites, Occultus Island, Reclamation, Second Chances, Eritrea, Japan, Rejects vs. Royals, Polynesia and Ayia Thekla, there was a Double Tribal Council in the merge, as part of the One Day Tribes twist, where the remaining castaways were divided back into two tribes for a single day, and both these tribes would vote out one player each between them, before converging back into the merged tribe the next day. All seasons except Reclamation and Second Chances had this occur at the final eight, with those two seasons featuring it at the final nine. The twist usually appeared with the Survivor Auction or Prized Position challenge, although not always.
  • In Last Leap there was a Double Tribal Council in the merge, featuring what was known as a Two-For-One vote. The TWO castaways with the highest number of votes were voted out, as opposed to just the one. It was implemented alongside the Prized Position challenge.
    • A similar Two-For-One vote happened in the pre-merge of Honduras, but this time it occurred pre-merge with a single tribe voting two people out in one night. It was different this time however as each castaway was allowed two votes each, as opposed to the one vote that the castaways of Last Leap got.
  • In Indonesia there was a Double Tribal Council in the merge which was combined with the return of the Fused Together twist. In this DTC, the final ten were divided into fives sets of pairs, with the challenge determining which one pair would be immune and not attend Tribal. The remaining four pairs were then forced to all vote for one of their pairs, with both castaways in that pair leaving the game simultaneously.
  • A number of seasons have featured more than one Double Tribal. They are Seychelles, Occultus Island, Second Chances, Japan, Last Leap, Conqueror's Crusade, Polynesia and Ragnarok.
    • Currently the only three seasons to feature three DTCs are Last Leap, Conqueror's Crusade and Polynesia, with the latter currently being the only season to feature FOUR Double Tribal Councils.
